Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir scored his fourth century in as many test matches, when he smashed his century on the first day of the second test match against Sri Lanka to create a record of sorts. There have been three batsmen who have scored a hundred in four consecutive test innings, and only one batsman who has done it in five test innings in succession.

However, Gambhir’s centuries have been punctuated by innings of relative failures – that is, in every test match his century has been followed or preceded by a lower score.

The players to score successive test hundreds are Rahul Dravid, Alan Melville, Jack Fingleton and Everton Weekes. Weekes scored five in a row, before he followed it up with four successive half centuries, including a 90. In fact, such was a golden period during his career that time that he smashed 12 at least-half centuries out of 13 successive innings.

In fact, looking back at Gambhir’s career, he has had at least one score of more than fifty in the last nine test matches, including seven centuries and four fifties. The four half centuries included a 97 that could have been his eighth century in the nine games!

Continuing with Gambhir’s purple patch, he averages 80 runs per innings in the last two years of test match cricket, and more than 100 in 2009 alone!

Also, in the 49 ODIs that he has played since 1st January, 2008, he averaged more than 42, which is at par with some of the best cricketers in the business.

As an opener, the best ever average in test matches has been Herbert Sutcliffe, who had a mean of around 61. Gambhir, so far in his career, has batted in 27 test matches and averages 58 runs per innings, making him one of the best in the business as an opener as well!

murali

Muthiah Muralitharan has said that he may not be able to play for Sri Lanka for too much longer as the continuous cricket seems to have taken toll on his body.

Earlier the ace bowler from Sri Lanka announced his intentions of playing in the 2011 version of the World Cup, and said that he would retire from the test match cricket in order to do that.

However, in the latest chat with the media, he said that there is a chance that he may not be able to even play in the ODIs given his fitness woes. Muralitharan has scalped 788 wickets in test match cricket – updated up to the second test match between India and Sri Lanka at Kanpur – and is the leading wicket-taker in the history of test match cricket. Shane Warne is some distance away at 708 wickets, but he has already announced his retirement from the game, as have the likes of Anil Kumble (number 3 with 619 sticks), Glen McGrath (4th with 563), Courtney Walsh (5th with 519), Kapil Dev (6th with 434), Sir Richard Hadlee (7th with 432), Shaun Pollock (8th with 421), Wasim Akram (9th with 414), and Curtly Ambrose (10th with 405).
