The dew on the outfield had caused much of the heart burn for the skipper, who would have almost realised that winning the toss automatically and blindly constituted for fielding first. And then, with the magnitude of dew falling down, it wouldn’t be too difficult chasing down the target the opposition sets. Any target that the opposition sets!

Even though in the Idea cup opener the Sri Lanka easily beat Bangladesh, their captain Kumar Sangakkara was a livid man.

In the post-match presentation, Sangakkara said, “I have seen dew before, but never like this. I wouldn’t want to field in conditions like this, my bowlers wouldn’t want to bowl in these conditions. The difference is, literally, day and night.”

He also added to good measure, and underlined the crux of the problem, “Talks are on, everybody has to like the idea, including the TV network.” Yes, in the end, it is the broadcaster who decides on the timing in order to optimise the revenues. And if they think that the late start is the way to go about it, not too many can do much about it!

Sadly for the bowlers, life continues to get miserable.

Former South African speedster Allan Donald could be the next bowling coach for India. Only recently, MS Dhoni had pleaded to the BCCI for a bowling coach as it would make the job easier for their main coach, Gary Kirstein. Looks like his plea has been heard by the BCCI.

As recently as the Champions League T20, the BCCI is said to have spoken with Donald informally about the job. Donald has also said that the “BCCI recruiters” have confirmed that the process will take some time before it was decided who will coach the side’s flagging bowling.

One hopes that the situation does not turn out to be like the one with Graham Ford. Or like Dav Whatmore. Ford had been interviewed for India’s coaching position but had gone back to his county side to use this as a counter-offer thanks to the board’s callousness.

Then, there had been talks with Whatmore, but he had gone on to talk to the media before anything for formalised, and the Board had backed out at the last minute! One hopes Donald hasn’t made things difficult for himself!

murali

Muthiah Muralitharan has said that he may not be able to play for Sri Lanka for too much longer as the continuous cricket seems to have taken toll on his body.

Earlier the ace bowler from Sri Lanka announced his intentions of playing in the 2011 version of the World Cup, and said that he would retire from the test match cricket in order to do that.

However, in the latest chat with the media, he said that there is a chance that he may not be able to even play in the ODIs given his fitness woes. Muralitharan has scalped 788 wickets in test match cricket – updated up to the second test match between India and Sri Lanka at Kanpur – and is the leading wicket-taker in the history of test match cricket. Shane Warne is some distance away at 708 wickets, but he has already announced his retirement from the game, as have the likes of Anil Kumble (number 3 with 619 sticks), Glen McGrath (4th with 563), Courtney Walsh (5th with 519), Kapil Dev (6th with 434), Sir Richard Hadlee (7th with 432), Shaun Pollock (8th with 421), Wasim Akram (9th with 414), and Curtly Ambrose (10th with 405).
